Campbell is a doctor living in a house with an Apache tribe such as Many Wounds' family during the Civil War.
When Magruder came looking for Quivira, Stone Hand, Many Wounds' father told Magruder that when he finds the city he would die to which Dr. Campbell translated and Stone Hand was shot in the head by Magruder.
Campbell was then killed by Magruder. An Apache woman sent a 10 year old Many Wounds to protect Colton. Then she came out with a rifle and shot Magruder in the eye. The other Confederates opened fire and killed other Apaches while Many Wounds held baby Colton and hid behind a rock While his people were massacred.
